Systems Biology will become mainstream in biological sciences this century. It can be used to systematically gather knowledge at all levels, from molecules to entire systems and its integration into quantitative (computer) models. These models make accurate simulation of biological processes possible.

This master's programme will give you the knowledge and practical skills necessary to unravel the complexity of these systems and use it for academic, industrial and societal progress. After you’ve graduated, your ability to unify life sciences and mathematics will make you a great candidate for a career in medical research, drug development and biotechnology.

In the Systems Biology programme, you'll play a central role in shaping your own education. You have plenty of room to choose your own set of courses that fit your specific interests and career ambitions.

As with many Maastricht University programmes, the master’s in Systems Biology is taught using Problem-Based Learning (PBL). You will work in small groups of about 12 students on real-life topics and problems. You conduct discussions, exchange knowledge and formulate your learning goals as a group. The master’s in Systems Biology takes PBL one step further by incorporating research into the equation through Research-Based Learning (RBL). In RBL, you work on contemporary research topics as part of your studies. In addition, practical skills trainings are incorporated into the courses.
