About Welkom in mijn Wijk

Welcome to my Neighbourhood (Welkom in mijn Wijk) is an exchange program between so-called 'BME schools' (schools with 70% or more black and minority ethnic students) and non-BME-schools. The exchange programme offers children an opportunity to broaden their horizons and interact with children outside of their own school, neighbourhood and social and ethnic group. The programme aims at strengthening social cohesion within urban environments. It does so by stimulating the multicultural competence of children who are growing up in an environment of cultural/ethnic separation. Furthermore, Welcome to my Neighbourhood focuses on children's commitment to their town (feeling of belonging) by making them hosts in their own area and introducing them to areas and people in the city unknown to them as yet. In Amsterdam (The Netherlands) the 2010/2011 programme is running for the fifth consecutive year. In the coming year new programs are developed and the project will also start in several other cities in The Netherlands. Welcome to my Neighbourhood has been accepted for inclusion in the Compendium of good practices in human rights education. The official title of the Compendium is: "Human Rights Education in the School Systems of Europe, Central Asia and North America: A Compendium of Good Practice".
