About Plant Production Systems Group - Wageningen University AND Research

The Plant Production Systems group combines production ecological theory with empirical knowledge to provide a better understanding of sustainability of farming systems around the world.

We develop methodologies to design new production systems that contribute to addressing societal problems of global significance, such as climate change, biodiversity loss and food security.

We use various modelling approaches based on simulation of crop (and where related, animal) production. Bio-economic optimization and statistical techniques are key. We use analytical and explorative methods to assess the scope for sustainable intensification in different farming contexts.

An interdisciplinary approach is central, as the issues deal with complex human systems. Our basis lies firmly in the natural sciences but close collaboration with groups from social sciences (e.g. economics, rural sociology, communication science) furthers integrated assessment.
