Just like in the other countries in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, we have a parliamentary democracy in Curaçao.

This means that citizens can influence the policy of the government through the elected Members of the Parliament. 'De Staten' (also called the Parliament) is, therefore, the highest body in the constitution of Curaçao and represents the entire Curaçao'an community.

The Parliament of Curaçao consists of 21 members, who are elected every four years. A new parliamentary year starts on the first Tuesday of September. In this opening meeting, the government's policy is explained by or on behalf of the Governor.
