About MSCA Digital Finance

Coordinated by Joerg Osterrieder, DIGITAL is a Horizon Europe-funded MSCA Industrial Doctoral Network with 17 researchers working across five pillars: European Financial Data Space, AI for Financial Markets, Explainable & Fair AI, Blockchain Applications, and Sustainability of Digital Finance. Running from 2024 to 2027, the network unites leading universities and industry partners across Europe to advance the methodologies and business models that will define the next era of finance. Our doctoral researchers tackle some of the most pressing challenges at the intersection of data science, artificial intelligence, and financial markets. WP1 builds the foundations for a European Financial Data Space, developing collaborative learning methods across data silos and detecting anomalies in high-dimensional, high-frequency financial data. WP2 brings artificial intelligence to financial markets, from reinforcement learning for European financial service providers to automated trading systems and financial trend prediction using NLP. WP3 addresses the growing need for explainable and fair AI-generated decisions, validating state-of-the-art XAI algorithms for financial applications and tackling fair algorithmic design and portfolio optimization under sustainability concerns. WP4 drives digital innovation through blockchain, designing risk management tools and industry standards for distributed ledger technology in finance. WP5 focuses on sustainability, simulating financial markets and evaluating products with a sustainability component — from green credit scoring and sustainable investment recommender systems to fraud detection in financial networks, Green AI for low-carbon computing, and agent-based modelling for long-term sustainable growth. Our researchers are embedded with industry partners through cross-border secondments, ensuring that research moves from theory to practice.
