The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre (AMT) is a non-profit cultural organization that has been bringing a rare and enchanting art form to life since 1985. Founded by opera director and designer Hendrik Bonneur, the theatre specializes in European classical marionette theatre, where hand-crafted wooden actors take center stage in unique adaptations of opera and musical theatre. Each marionette is carefully designed and built in our own atelier, then brought to life on stage by a team of six skilled puppeteers.

Under the artistic direction of Frederieke Cannegieter, AMT creates performances that seamlessly blend music, design, and movement. Our repertoire, specially adapted for marionettes, ranges from opera to chamber music theatre, making it a magical experience for both adults and children. Performances take place in our intimate theatre near the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam, an atmospheric setting that reflects the craftsmanship and artistry of this tradition.

Beyond public performances, we also offer custom cultural experiences: Exclusive opera dinners and high teas, combining fine dining with live performance. Workshops and school performances, inspiring the next generation to discover music and theatre. Backstage tours offer a rare glimpse into the artistry of marionette-making.

Venue rental is also possible, where companies, families, and groups can host unforgettable events in a unique cultural setting.

Our collaborations with renowned singers and musicians, often from the world of authentic performance practice, ensure that every production is rooted in musical excellence. Over the years, AMT has proudly represented Dutch marionette theatre internationally, performing at festivals in Russia, Italy, France, and Germany.
